A previous post related an instance in which Twitter users created bad publicity. In contrast, the following is a great example of the remarkable power of social media to promote a charitable cause.
Nineteen-year-old Ohio teenager, Torri Biddle, was born without a right arm. A group of her friends launched a campaign on Twitter using “#HandforTorri” that caught the attention of The Buried Life, a charity that helps people achieve their dreams. According to Adweek, The Buried Life persuaded Hanger Inc., a manufacturer of prosthetics, to donate a $150,000 bionic arm. A video about her story is also circulating through Buzzfeed. The video features Torri using the bionic arm to tie shoelaces and to hug her father with both arms for the first time.
